The ancient Huizhou consisted of six counties under the control of one Prefecture. Its picturesque mountainous landscape, unique geographical environment and historical background helped form a Confucian cultural atmosphere. Marked with unique cultural and geographical features, the unique “Three Carvings” of brick, stone and wood carvings are rich with delicate aesthetic flavor. The rich traditional culture embodied in the Huizhou vernacular architecture conveys various ideas in building techniques, civil life, ethical values and aesthetic pursuit, representing the cultural idea of nature unity. These villages are the manifestations of the balanced harmony between man and nature, such as Hongcun, Xidi, Longchuan, Chengkan, Tangyue, Tangmo, Nanping and so on. The physical building components, models and pictures exhibited here present the fantastic beauty and splendor of the ancient Huizhou vernacular architecture.
